Mobile operators have not increased rates: PTA
In June 2018, the honorable Supreme Court suspended the withholding tax, sales tax and service charges on prepaid recharge cards. The mobile cellular operators (CMO) complied with this in letter and spirit and a balance of Rs. 100 were received in a reload of Rs. 100
It is imperative to mention that the Telecommunications Authority of Pakistan (PTA) is not regulating the prices of CMOs, with the exception of the Significant Market Power (SMP) operator, since the mobile market is competitive. As a result of the suspension of taxes and service charges, the CMOs adjusted the prices of the standard prepaid rate packages. In the case of hybrid packages / monthly cards, additional incentives were provided to subscribers in the form of voice, SMS and data.
On April 24, 2019, the Supreme Court of Pakistan issued the following order:
- For reasons that will be recorded later, this case of human rights is resolved without interference in the collection of public revenues and all provisional orders.
After the restoration of taxes by the honorable Supreme Court of Pakistan, the CMOs did not increase the rates, but applied the withholding tax, the general sales tax / federal special taxes and the service charges on the existing rates.
The PTA is attentive to the tariffs / tariffs charged by the CMOs and will initiate action on any reported incidence of collection over the published rates and applicable taxes.
